Willow Kayne on her new single ‘Rat Race’: “It’s a diary tune”

Willow Kayne has spoken about her new single ‘Rat Race’, telling NME that the track is a “magazine entry tune”.

Speaking backstage at All Points East festival, the Bristol-born singer-songwriter explained that the track, which is out today (August 22), is part of a new project.

“This next project is about my experience in London, and also in this industry,” he said. “‘Rat Race’ is my take on London and how everything is so fast, and you have to keep up with it. It dissolves into that. It’s a little cerebral, but it’s fine I have it.”

Kayne added that he didn’t necessarily know if he would release ‘Rat Race’ when he first wrote it, saying, “It’s definitely a diary tune, and it’s great that people like that stuff people. I really didn’t think it was. to come out when he was released.” I wrote for the first time, so it’s precious.”

Speaking about his next musical project, Kayne explained that it was “more or less done”, and that “it goes into a lot of things [como] synaesthesia and London experiences” Although Kayne did not reveal the biggest details of his next release, he described it as “very handsome, very nostalgic, very mixed”.

Discussing his collaborations with Nile Rodgers after he was added to the Chic legend as a mentor, Kayne explained how their collaboration first came about after he won the Rising Star award at the Ivor Novello Awards in 2021.

From there, working with Rodgers taught him that “there is no crazy, tactical formula to make a banger.”

He said, “There’s no real ‘what you have to do to make a banger.”

Willow Kayne publishes “Rat Race” today. Her UK tour dates continue until September. Visit here for tickets and more information.
