Kate Bush’s ‘Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)’ is covered by RAYE as part of this year’s Live Salon Month – watch the video below.
The singer visited BBC Radio 1 yesterday (September 7) to record two songs live, starting with her recent single ‘Black Mascara’.
RAYE then picked up Bush’s classic 1985 single, which has become popular in recent years thanks to its appearance in Stranger Things 4.
For his version, the London artist ditched the galloping beat and synths of the original song in favor of piano and stingers.
“It wasn’t right for me to change much. We turned it down, without drums, as it was a ballad,” explained RAYE of his darker version of “Running Up That Hill.”
“[Bush] he wrote this record 100%, he produced it 100%… he’s like one of my idols. I’m not going to infuse your music. I’m just going to sing it in the style of Kate Bush, but with my voice.”
After the performance, RAYE said, “If I ever listen to her, I hope I don’t hate her because she’s like the woman, you know what I’m saying?”

Live Salon Month 2022 has welcomed Self-Esteem, Yungblud and Wet Leg. Other performances planned include The 1975, Willow, Nova Twins, Beabadoobee and Rina Sawayama.
RAYE are teasing their 2022 studio debut, and have described ‘Black Mascara’ as “the only classy dance track” on the record.
Meanwhile, Kate Bush has reissued ‘Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)’ as a CD single.
The song topped Spotify’s recent report of the best songs of summer 2022, along with “As It Was” by Harry Styles. “RUTH” came in second in the global rankings, but topped Styles as the most streamed song of the summer on the US scene.
