Watch Jeff Buckley Cover Dave Grohl’s Violet Daughter at the Taylor Hawkins Tribute Concert

Dave Grohl’s daughter covered two Jeff Buckley songs in tribute to Taylor Hawkins at a special memorial concert held today (September 3) at Wembley Stadium.

Performances include Liam Gallagher, Mark Ronson, Josh Homme of Queens Of The Stone Age, Supergrass, Brian May of Queens and Roger Taylor, Chrissie Hynde of The Pretenders, Travis Barker of Blink-182, Brian Johnson of Blink-182 , Metallica’s Brian Johnson on the star-studded program. Kesha and Lars Ulrich, among others.

Before his daughter’s guest appearance, Grohl spoke of Hawkins’ unparalleled passion for music. “Over the years, Taylor Hawkins has introduced me to a lot of music,” he said. “He was a musicologist, he knew more about music than anyone I’ve ever met.

“He always made me want to discover albums I hadn’t heard of. One of them was ‘Grace,’ by Jeff Buckley, a classic album. So tonight, as we honor the music that Taylor loved, we’re going to played a few songs from ‘Grace’ by Jeff Buckley.

Grohl then assembled a band that included himself on drums, Alain Johannes from Queens Of The Stone Age and Them Crooked Vultures, guitarist Jason Falkner, Chris Chaney from Jane’s Addiction, and his daughter Violet. The Foo Fighters frontman described the latter as “the only person I know who can sing a Jeff Buckley song.”

The 16-year-old took to the stage with the old musicians and took it upon herself to sing versions of “Last Goodbye” and “Grace”. Check out the film of his performance around the -1.55.29 mark above.

The Taylor Hawkins Tribute Concert is available for live streaming on MTV’s YouTube channel worldwide and Paramount+ in the US. The second tribute show will be held on September 27 at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles.

Grohl and Hawkins’ bandmates in Foo Fighter opened the concert today with a moving speech paying tribute to their late drummer. “For those who knew him personally, they know that no one else could smile, or laugh, or dance, or sing like him,” the frontman said.

Comedian Dave Chappelle also recalled spending time with the rock star and his son in New York. “I have seen Taylor be a rock star many nights, but it was the first time I saw him be a father, and his father is cool,” he said. “Taylor Hawkins is a legend of a man, he is a legend of a musician and he is a legend of a father.”

Liam Gallagher made his live debut today, performing two Oasis songs with the help of the surviving members of the Foo Fighters, while Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Chad Smith shared a heartwarming story about Hawkins in a special video message.

Hawkins, who was the drummer for the Foo Fighters since 1997, as well as performing in groups such as Chevy Metal and Taylor Hawkins And The Coattail Riders, died in March 2022. He was 50 years old .
