Starting January 1, 2024, Unity, the game engine used by popular titles such as The influence of Genshinwill impose a controversial installation fee for game developers. Basically, every time a player downloads and installs a game, it will cost the developer a few cents if it has met certain thresholds. Of course, the most popular title Hover, The influence of Genshinwould be entitled to this rate.
The required thresholds vary depending on the edition of Unity the game developer is running. If HoYoverse is signed with the Enterprise edition, the company only needs to generate more than $1 million in the past year and have Genshin Impact installed more than 1 million times. Both criteria are easy to achieve due to the great popularity of this game.
The developer would then have to comply with the following rates:
- Enterprise (1-100,000 installs per month): $0.125 per new install
- Enterprise (100,000-500,000 installs per month): $0.06 per new install
- Enterprise (500,000-1,000,000 installs per month): $0.02 per new install
- Enterprise (1,000,000+ installs per month): $0.01 per new install
Most importantly, under the new Unity rules, deleting the game and reinstalling it counts as a “new install.” So an Enterprise subscriber who gets 1,000,001 new installs in a month would pay $10,000.01 with this change if all those installs came from countries where standard rates apply. If that trend continued for a year it would cost the developer $120,000.12.
This amount of money is insignificant to the developers of Genshin Impact HoYoverse. Remember that game banners usually generate several million dollars every 21 days. Paying a few thousand dollars more to the Enterprise membership would not have a significant impact on the company’s overall cash flow.
So far, HoYoverse has not commented on this price change and the introduction of fees, but it has drawn a lot of criticism from the wider developer community. All of the new Unity rates will come into effect on 1 January 2024. It is important to note that there will be some differences depending on the region, as Unity said: “Finally, we structure our rates taking into account the diversity of gaming monetization between more established regions such as North America and Europe, compared to emerging gaming regions such as India.“.
