Tyler Joseph, Twenty One Pilots was working on a song for the new film ‘Top Gun’ before “Tom Cruise made everyone angry”

Twenty One Pilots singer Tyler Joseph claimed he was asked to write a song for the Top Gun: Maverick soundtrack before star and producer Tom Cruise rejected the offer.

Joseph said in a new interview that he had been invited to add a song to the 1986 Top Gun sequence.

“I was working with the music placement man for the new Top Gun on writing a new song for them and then I think Tom Cruise came in and released everyone,” Joseph told the Californian radio station. KROQ yesterday (May 9) [vía MusicNews].

According to Joseph, he did not start working on the project when Cruise allegedly fell out. He added that his input was probably influenced by changes made to the film following the COVID pandemic.

“I saw some scenes. They brought me in to show me some scenes and things, and I don’t really think I started writing,” Joseph said. “Actually, it was pretty soon after they introduced me to show me parts of the movie what they were looking for and stuff, then I got the news that there was a wholesale trade.”

A Cruise representative has not yet responded to MusicNews’ request for comment on Joseph’s claims.

Top Gun: Maverick, with Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly and Jon Hamm alongside Cruise in the title role, will open in UK and US theaters on May 27th.

The soundtrack features original Lady Gaga and OneRepublic songs, and a live version of Teller performing “Great Balls of Fire” by Jerry Lee Lewis.

Twenty One Pilots, meanwhile, has announced details of a new “movie experience” coming to the big screen later this month.

For one night, May 19, the band will show an extended cut for their 2021 live performance, documenting the recently released show for their LP “Scaled And Icy”.

The film is summarized as follows: “Starring Twenty One Pilots singer / guitarist Tyler Joseph and drummer Josh Dun., ‘Twenty One Pilots Cinema Experience’ offers a reimagined, psychedelic look at theater and large – scale live performance.
