Top Gun: Maverick ‘explains why the main characters did not return to the sequence

Top Gun: Maverick’s director Joseph Kosinski explained why two major characters from the first film did not return for the sequel.

Kelly McGillis, who plays Charlie Blackwood, Pete “Maverick” Mitchell’s love interest, and Meg Ryan as Carole Bradshaw, Goose’s wife, are especially absent from the new film.

Miles Teller was cast as the son of Nick “Goose” Bradshaw in the new film, but his mother is missing.

“We were not exploring stories,” Kosinski said in an interview with Insider, adding that he did not consider bringing the two women back.

For his part, Tyler Joseph of Twenty One Pilots claimed he was asked to write a song for the film before Tom Cruise rejected the offer.
