Tobey Maguire cast as Charlie Chaplin in the Damien Chazelle film director Babylon’s upcoming film.
The actor, who previously starred in the film in an unknown role and as an executive producer, was revealed to play the silent film icon during a presentation at CinemaCon in Las Vegas on Thursday (April 28).
The event also featured the first images of Babylon, described by Variety as a cross between Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby and Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, with “bright music, dazzling costumes and high – end makeup. “
Babylon is a period drama set in the late 1920s, as the film industry shifts from silent to talkative. Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie lead the cast as silent film stars John Gilbert and Clara Bow, respectively, and Maguire as Chaplin in a supporting role.
Other certified cast members include Katherine Waterston (Domestic Vice), Samara Weaving (Ready Or Not), Jean Smart (Hacks), Li Jun Li (Wu Assassins), and Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Babylon is Chazelle’s fifth feature film, following Guy And Madeline On A Park Bench, Whiplash, La La Land and First Man 2018, starring Ryan Gosling.
Maguire re-enacted his role as Spider-Man in last year’s film Spider-Man: No Way Home, starring Andrew Garfield and Tom Holland. Previously, Maguire’s last screen role was in 2014’s Sacrifice of the Pawns.
Speaking on his return to the role of Spider-Man last month, Maguire said: “We were sincerely coming together, hugging and supporting each other. It was absolutely beautiful.”
Babylon is set to launch in December 2022.
