The Japanese celebrate Pork Day

Samhain continues to be a month full of unofficial celebrations by the Japanese community on social media., and November 22 could not be an exception. For reasons of pronunciation, November 22nd is celebrated as the “Pig’s Day (Ii Twintail no Hi)“, so fans dedicate the day to celebrate this hairstyle that has been popular for many years.

Pigtails are an iconic hairstyle in otaku culture due to their frequent appearance in Anime, Manga, and video game titles. Often attributed to franchising Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon the initial popularity of the hairstyle worn by the main character Use Tsukino in the early 1990s. Also, double pigtails became a major part of the Japanese female idol scene in the 1990s-2000s.

The following month, on February 2, 2012, the Japan Anniversary Association registered a Pigtail Day holiday. This year there are two dates dedicated to this hairstyle in Japanese culture.
