Switch Sports Proves That Nintendo’s Great Patience Pays Off

In the mid-2000s, it was the biggest game on the planet. If the mini-game collection had been published by Activision, EA, or Ubisoft, by now we would have a dozen sequels and resumes, and maybe an animated show on Nickelodeon as well. For better or worse, Wii Sports is a Nintendo franchise, so instead we get a sequel, a remake, and a decade of radio silence.

As a fan of the title, I was disappointed every time Nintendo ended a press conference or Nintendo Direct not to mention motion-controlled bowling. But as a writer who has covered this topic since the days of the Wii, I understood the business logic of life. Nintendo has so many beloved studios that they could cannibalize each other if each series got the sequences that fans felt they deserved.

So I stayed. And wait.

When the publisher announced last year, I had almost given up hope. I assumed that if Nintendo wanted to take advantage of the Wii Sports formula, it would have made another inbox package for the Switch. I was wrong in every way.

As the sales figures show (and the empty shelves at my local Target), Nintendo did not need a bundled game to sell the Switch. And when he helped sell the Nintendo Wiis, the success of the Switch has the potential to be a huge success. That same year, the Switch surpassed the Wii in total sales, surpassing 100 million units sold. That is, the potential audience is gigantic. And if it does the same with classic Nintendo games, increasing in large sales volume over several years, the game will keep the Switch relevant as it enters the golden years of its hardware lifecycle.

Once again, Nintendo has shown that patience is a virtue. We saw a similar scenario last year with a project that has been in and out of development since 2005. Whether the publisher is waiting for the right time to revive a series or keep a project in development hell, the end result is as the same. a lasting quality that their peers do not (and probably will not) match.

Until recently, the phrase “late game is good in the long run, but a bad rushed game is forever” incorrectly attributed to Nintendo icon and Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto. However, it’s much more likely that the quote was just a common phrase in the games industry, the kind of aphorism that helps creative people set the accounting team back in another month or two. I’d rather think that Miyamoto did not invent the phrase, because that would mean that every major publisher in the games industry knows that this mantra is true. Only Nintendo consistently surrendered.
