Supergrass pays tribute to Taylor Hawkins at Wembley: “Forever fucking young”

Supergrass helped pay tribute to Taylor Hawkins at his special anniversary concert (September 3) at Wembley Stadium.

The British band is one of many iconic acts taking part in tonight’s concert, including Liam Gallagher, Mark Ronson, Josh Homme from Queens Of The Stone Age, Supergrass, Brian May and Roger Taylor from Queen, Chrissie Hynde from The Pretenders, Blink. 182’s Travis Barker, AC/DC’s Brian Johnson, Kesha, Metallica’s Lars Ulrich and more.

Before Supergrass took the stage, an old video from their tour with the Foo Fighters in the ’90s was played, in which they considered supporting Hawkins. “Taylor has always been a fan of the band and he was on the side of the stage watching us, and I told him he was going to play ‘Caught By The Fuzz’ at the end, and he played at about 500mph.” drummer Danny Goffey said in the clip.

After the video ended, actor Jason Sudeikis shared his own thoughts on seeing Supergrass open for the Foo Fighters. “Taylor not only made music, but he also had a huge fan base,” he said. “One of his favorite bands was Supergrass; he thought their self-titled album was one of the best ever.

“The first time I saw the Foo Fighters was when my friends Billy and Corey and I went to St. Louis, Missouri, in 1997. It was also the first time I saw Taylor Hawkins play drums live. they were the openers on that tour. Supergrass and luckily I fell in love with Supergrass too. Taylor was such a fan of theirs that he came on stage one night and helped them close the show with a version of ‘ Caught By The Fuzz.'”

The Oxford trio took to the stage to play three songs: ‘Richard III’, ‘Alright’ and ‘Caught By The Fuzz’. “Oh boy, Wembley, this is crazy,” said boss Gaz Coombes. “It’s beautiful. We’re going to play you a few songs that we know were Taylor’s favorites. We hope you enjoy them.” Before ‘Alright’, he said: “Taylor Hawkins, fucking young forever.” See the images of the moment above, starting at the -1.32.29 mark.

The Taylor Hawkins Tribute Concert is available for live streaming on MTV’s YouTube channel worldwide and Paramount+ in the US. The second tribute show will be held on September 27 at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles.

Grohl and Hawkins’ bandmates in Foo Fighter opened the concert today with a moving speech paying tribute to their late drummer. “For those who knew him personally, they know that no one else could smile, or laugh, or dance, or sing like him,” the frontman said.

Comedian Dave Chappelle also recalled spending time with the rock star and his son in New York. “I have seen Taylor be a rock star many nights, but it was the first time I saw him be a father, and his father is cool,” he said. “Taylor Hawkins is a legend of a man, he is a legend of a musician and he is a legend of a father.”

Liam Gallagher made his live debut today, performing two Oasis songs with the help of the surviving members of the Foo Fighters, while Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Chad Smith shared a heartwarming story about Hawkins in a special video message. Grohl’s 16-year-old daughter Violet also took to the stage to cover two Jeff Buckley songs at the show, and supergroup Them Crooked Vultures reunited for the first time in 12 years.

Hawkins, who was the drummer for the Foo Fighters since 1997, as well as performing in groups such as Chevy Metal and Taylor Hawkins And The Coattail Riders, died in March 2022. He was 50 years old .
