Spice Girls fans criticize Geri for hugging Nadine Dorries in Eurocup final: “The truth is she took it to the left”
Spice Girls fans have expressed their dismay after Geri Halliwell was photographed hugging Culture Secretary Nadine Dorries at the Euro 2022 final.
It comes after the Tory MP posted a photo showing Halliwell with his arms around Dorries to celebrate the Lionesses’ 2-1 win at Wembley Stadium.
“Girl power takes off from Wembley tonight,” wrote Dorries.
Many supporters cited the Culture Secretary’s record of voting against gay marriage and “recently the transgender community”.
“Geri actually hit left and jerked right huh,” joked one Twitter user.
Another said: “Geri is doing everything she can to mess up her legacy.
“Oh my gosh, just when I thought Geri couldn’t get any lower in my estimation, she pulls this off her sleeve,” one fan continued.
“If you don’t know who Geri Horner is happily hugging, google Nadine Dorries. Sorry in advance,” wrote another.
Other fans said they were not surprised by the move, after the singer paid tribute to Margaret Thatcher in the 1990s and paid tribute to the late Prime Minister when she died in 2013.
“Geri was also very open about her Tory status in the 90s – she said Thatcher was the epitome of Girl Power so we shouldn’t be too surprised,” one user noted.
Another said: “Always been a Tory, I don’t know why anyone is surprised. They should lower their expectations of pop stars.”
Earlier this year, Dorries announced it was going ahead with plans to privatize Channel 4, which would see the network sold after 40 years of public ownership.
Footage from an earlier Channel 4 interview led to comparisons between the Culture Secretary and Catherine Tate’s character.
Recently, Joe Lycett targeted Dorries in a mock resignation letter sent to Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
