South African rapper AKA has been killed, according to police

Police have said the South African rapper AKA is likely to have committed murder.

The Cape Town-born artist – whose real name is Kiernan Jarryd Forbes – was fatally shot outside a restaurant in the coastal city of Durban on Friday night, February 10, BBC News reports.

KwaZulu-Natal Police Chief Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi said the gunman approached the 35-year-old man from behind before shooting him in the side of the head at point-blank range.

According to Mkhwanazi, the second gunman then started shooting to discourage the onlookers from responding to the “hit.” One of the shots killed celebrity chef Tibz Motsoane, a friend of AKA.

Due to the evidence collected so far, the police believe that AKA was murdered.

The agents have said that they know the identity of the “two shooters” in question. They are still checking the identities of everyone who was present at the scene on the night in question. No arrests have been made.

Investigators are using the suspects’ data to reconstruct their communications and movements before the murders, as they continue their efforts to determine exactly what happened.

Speaking to Newsroom Afrika, Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi said: “We know that his aim was to kill AKA first, and the second suspect could have killed anyone else . [persona] for he fired several times, so that anyone who was in the way could have been hit.”

Tony Forbes, AKA’s father, has asked people to stop speculating on the internet about the circumstances of his son’s death. He said the family is focusing on giving the late rapper “a dignified promotion”.

AKA is scheduled to be buried this Saturday (February 18) following a public funeral tomorrow (February 17) at the Sandton Convention Center in Johannesburg. You can follow the ceremony live here.

The artist, who has won many awards in South Africa for his music, started his career as part of the rap group Entity before going solo. He was also recognized on the world stage, receiving nominations for the Black Entertainment Television Award (BET) in the United States and the MTV Europe Music Award.
