Earlier this month, the company UNDER CONSTRUCTION announced a collaboration with a multimedia franchise of Gotoubun no Hanayome (The Quintessential Quintuplets) launching various products that are currently available to book from last August 11. Or so it was assumed, because in less than two days all the products were sold out.
Products include wallpapers based on all-new illustrations of the Nakano Quintuplets, as well as five sets featuring merchandise and apparel. (the company sells clothing in Japan), with the former priced individually at ¥8,800 (about $66) and the latter priced individually at 11,000 yen (about $82). However, no matter which one is opened, they all appear to be out of stock.
Did they all sell out at once? In part yes, but the most important thing is to indicate part of the title of each product: “2部水量限定 (Limited quantity of two copies)“. That’s right, there were only two of all these products in stock, so only the most die-hard fans who logged in within the first seconds of bookings opening got any of the products in question.
It is a rather dubious sales campaign, because it favors resellers (already seen in virtual markets in Japan with stratospheric prices), whose profits are not at all in favor of the company that launched the original products. Few people understand the decision to limit products to two stocks, when the goal in any business is to maximize profits.
Summary of Gotoubun no Hanayome
Fuutarou Uesugi is an excellent high school student, but he lives a difficult life. His aloof personality and lonely nature have left him friendless, and his father is in debt, forcing his family to struggle to survive. One day, during his lunch break, Uesugi gets into an argument with a transfer student who demanded “his seat”, causing the two to dislike each other. On the same day, he is given a golden opportunity to pay off his family’s debt: a private tutoring job for the daughter of a wealthy family, with a salary five times the market rate. He accepts the proposal, but is horrified to learn that the client, Itsuki Nakano, is the girl he confronted earlier!
After unsuccessfully trying to get Itsuki’s approval, Uesugi discovers that his problems don’t end there: Itsuki is actually a quintuplet, so on top of that, he also has to tutor her sisters: Miku, Yotsuba, Nino, and Ichika. “Despite the real threat of failure, they have nothing to do with a tutor. However, his family’s livelihood is in danger, so Uesugi continues, steadfast in his determination to rid the sisters of their hatred of studying and lead them successfully to a degree.
