Sam Smith refused to share the secret formula for the perfect song – except because that formula, they admitted, doesn’t really exist.

In a new episode of the series Opening Song from Spotify, Smith talked about the struggles of some songwriters and why — as much as some try to hit every song they write right away — there’s no clear path to success as an artist.
“Surely no one knows what they are doing,” they said. “Even the greatest writers in the world, who have written so many hits, can pretend they know, but they don’t. They don’t know magic.”
As for her own success, Smith claimed that her unwavering determination helped them, urging young artists to “never lower the bar.” And they said to him: “You know what you want. And if you don’t know what you want, you have to ask yourself. And don’t stop until you get it.”

Meanwhile, Smith prepares to release his fourth album, Gloria, on January 27. The singles will include “Love Me More” and “Unholy” (featuring Kim Petras), and Smith recently became the first openly non-binary artist to top the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The record will also feature appearances by Ed. Sheeran, Jesse Reyes and Koffee. The album will also feature collaborations from Ed Sheeran, Jessie Reyez and Koffee.
Shortly after the release of “Gloria”, Smith will embark on a UK and European tour. They will also be playing at next year’s Mad Cool festival, alongside the likes of Liam Gallagher, The Prodigy, The Black Keys, Queens Of The Stone Age and Lil Nas X.
