Rapper May Say Kanye West ‘Evaluated’ Their Friendship

Chance The Rapper has opened up about footage leaked last year of being yelled at by Kanye West, saying the interaction made him “evaluate” their friendship.

Last January, a video surfaced of Chance and West in the studio together for a ‘DONDA’ recording session. It showed West – now legally known as Ye – becoming increasingly agitated before lashing out at Chance, telling him to sit his “ass and listen to the album or get out.”

Speaking to The Morning Hustle about the exchange in a recent interview, Chance said it was a clip from “a bigger moment, because nobody’s going to get the full story of what’s going on.”

“I’ve seen people put fake captions under the video to make it sound like they were talking about my music or something. But honestly, this is real life. I have real friends and they go through real problems.”

The clip was part of a documentary about “DONDA” made by Dame Dash. In his account of the scene, Dash said that Chance had come to see West because of the publicity surrounding his failing mental health.

“I went out to check on my friend,” Chance confirmed, “I and a lot of other people still love Ye. But he’s human, he’s not perfect. He was obviously going through it at the time… It made me evaluate my friendship with him, for sure. I’ve never been so close to him going through an incident.”

“At the end of the day, I definitely want the man. That’s my type. It’s unfortunate that people can take advantage of a moment that’s real.”

West’s tenth album, ‘DONDA’, arrived in August last year after a series of delays. It kicked off with two listening events in Atlanta, each with different guests including Pusha T, Playboi Carti, Jay-Z, Travis Scott and more.

Months later, in February 2022, West followed up with “DONDA 2”, which was only available on his Stem Player device. Commenting on ‘DONDA 2’ in a review, NME’s Rhian Daly wrote: “There’s nothing particularly interesting about much of ‘Donda 2’ and many of the songs feel broken and half-baked.”

“They could sound unfinished as they are, but it is understood that the rapper feels that anything can hurt his status as a hip-hop legend.”

Elsewhere, Chance is releasing a string of 2022 singles, including “A Bar About A Bar,” Vic Mensa’s “Writing Exercise #3: Wraith,” Moses Sumney’s “Child Of God,” and “The Highs & The Lows ” by Joey Bada$$.
