Peter Hook says his Rock & Roll Hall of Fame nomination could be an ‘olive branch’ amid New Order controversy

Peter Hook has said that Joy Division and New Order’s joint nomination for this year’s Rock & Roll Hall of Fame could be an “olive branch” for their outlandish peers.

Kate Bush, Missy Elliott, Cyndi Lauper, Rage Against The Machine, George Michael and The White Stripes are some of the names that could make the list.

Joy Division and New Order were named together. This is because Bernard Sumner, guitarist and keyboardist of the first band, Stephen Morris, drummer, and Hook, bassist, regrouped as New Order after the death of their lead singer, Ian Curtis, in 1980.

Other bands with similar evolutions have been inducted together into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame before, including the Small Faces and the Faces in 2012.

Speaking to Billboard about Joy Division and New Order’s joint nomination, Hook said the recognition “made me smile all day” and that it could be “the olive branch we need to end injustice.”

The “injustices” Hook cited involved a feud from more than a decade ago, when Sumner, Morris and New Order keyboardist/guitarist Gillian Gilbert reunited without him (Hook left the band in 2007) after four years. hiatus in 2011. There was also a copyright dispute before.

Subsequently, an out-of-court settlement was reached in a copyright lawsuit. Hook said that “the musicians “have not yet spoken to each other, personally, for 11 years. We are still fighting tooth and nail… I think we are going to break the record for the longest feud in history. very tragic.

“It’s going to be a tough awards show if we get through, but as my wife said we have to rise above these things… and be nice and polite and think of the best.

“Maybe this is the olive branch that we have to end the injustices done to the New Order in the end. It’s a very strange position but, you know, we’re not the first group to put others past them, and we will not be the last,” he said.

Hook also spoke of his pride at being nominated. “To be honest with you, we were always against this kind of thing when we started,” he said.

“It was the old punk stuff: we hope we die before we get old and destroy all the old musicians etc. etc. and what rubbish the award ceremonies are. And suddenly they give one for you, and when you get older you realize. …yeah, it’s great, I’m humbled, really. It’s nice, and it’s fun to be grateful.

“I will be happy with us. Since we started as Warsaw, I have always felt a lot of competition towards other bands. You want to do better than them, you want to achieve something. So this is attractive enough for me.”

Joy Division has been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame since 2004 and New Order since 2006. Eligible artists are 25 years after the release of their first album.

Hook added to Billboard that he is happy with the joint recognition. “Sounds good to me,” he said. “It was kind of weird. Joy Division was a great and powerful entity, and it was so sad how it ended. But the three of us – Bernie, Stephen and I – drew strength from the weakness by starting New Order together.”

“we started [Joy Division] after seeing the Sex Pistols, and ever since then we’ve been banging our heads against walls and doors and musically kicking them down. We’ve always been the square spike in a round hole like Joy Division and the square spike in a round hole like New Order.
