Isayama was born in Oyama, Oita Prefecture, Japan, which is now part of Hita. It was during his high school years that he began submitting manga works to competitions. Upon graduation, he enrolled in the manga design program of the arts department at the Kyushu Design Institute. In 2006, the publisher was awarded the Grand Magazine Prize known as MGP Kodansha with a short version of Shingeki or Kyojin (Attack on Titan), who received the award “Fine work“. At the age of twenty, he moved to Tokyo and worked in an internet cafe so that he could dedicate himself to manga writing.
