MJ Lenderman pays tribute to Bob Dylan with his new single “Knockin
MJ Lenderman has shared his new single ‘Knockin’. Watch the track below.
The song, which was officially released yesterday (August 7), first appeared on a self-recorded EP and was written between the recording and the release of “Boat Songs,” Lenderman’s 2022 hit.
It also pays homage to legendary songwriter Bob Dylan and is directly inspired by his iconic track “Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door.”
Recorded at Drop of Sun Studios in Asheville, North Carolina, the single sees the indie guitarist put his own spin on the 1973 classic, replacing the stripped-down structure with his signature vocal tone and a collection of reverb-enchanted guitars.
“I was spending a lot of time watching John Daly videos and I came across a cover he does of Dylan’s ‘Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door,'” Lenderman explains of his reasons for covering the song.
“Daly’s version includes an extra verse about golf. My ‘Knockin’ was a staple of MJ Lenderman & The Wind’s live show and it was a good idea to re-record it professionally.” See the content below.
Knockin’ will be featured on an upcoming 7″ single, as will Lenderman’s previous single, ‘Rudolph’. It will be released later this fall via new label ANTI. The single can be pre-ordered here.
The two recent singles follow the three albums that the indie guitarist has already released on his own: ‘MJ Lenderman’ (2019), ‘Ghost of Your Guitar Solo’ (2021) and ‘Boat Songs’ (2022).
Currently, the artist is embarking on the last concerts of his solo tour of the United States, which started in Tennessee last month and took him to stops in Indiana, Illinois and Ohio.
The remaining concerts on the tour include dates in Pioneertown, Calif., tonight (Aug. 8), Los Angeles, Calif., on Thursday (Aug. 10) and a slot at Thing Fest in Port Townsend, Wash., on August. 25. Find your remaining tickets here.
