Mercury Prize nominees share their responses to the 2022 shortlist: ‘It’s an honour’

Little Simz gave a shout out to regular bandmate Inflo, who also performed ‘Sometimes I Might Be Introvert’, “for always supporting him and pouring an abundance of love into the music”.

He said, “And YOU, the people. Thank you for the continued support on this album.”

Self-Esteem, for her part, wrote: “This one always meant so much. I’m so glad I don’t have to think of a cute form of self-esteem to hide my disappointment this time. ‘Pleasure Prioritizing’ on the shortlist for 2022.” @MercuryPrize @FreeNow_UK“.

Nova Twins said: “There are no words to describe how we feel right now. When we started our band we often talked about our dreams and aspirations and Mercury was high on that list.

“’Supernova’ is very close to our hearts, so it’s crazy to be one of the top 12 albums this year. . They pushed the view in front of us, creating space for us.”

Jessie Buckley & Bernard Butler tweeted that they were “thrilled” to be included in this year’s shortlist, adding, “Thank you all for the continued support.”

Fergus McCreadie wrote: “Can’t believe it! Forest Floor has been shortlisted for the 2022 Mercury Prize for FREE NOW.”

Acts missing from the 2022 list who were eligible are Fontaines DC (‘Skinty Fia’), Kae Tempest (‘The Line Is A Curve’), The Smile (‘A Light For Attracting Attention’) and Dave (‘ We’re All Alone in This Together’).

This year’s 12 artist nominees will receive a “specially commissioned ‘Album of the Year’ trophy, while the overall winner will also receive the winner’s trophy and £25,000 cash prize,” according to Mercurys official website.

It was announced yesterday (July 25) that a handful of musicians including Anna Calvi, Lanterns On The Lake’s Hazel Wilde, Loyle Carner and Jamie Cullum have joined as judges for the 2022 award, as well as many broadcasters and critics.

Last year Arlo Parks took home the 2021 Mercury Prize for his acclaimed debut album, “Collapsed In Sunbeams”.
