Summary of Kimitachi wa Dou Ikiru ka
“How do you live?” It begins with Copper, a fifteen-year-old boy who has recently suffered the death of his father, looking out over his hometown in Tokyo, taking in the thousands of people below, and beginning to ask life’s big questions. How many people are there in the world? How is her life? Are we made of molecules? The book moves between Copper’s story and her uncle’s diary entries, where she offers advice and helps her learn basic truths about how the world works.
Over the course of a year of his life, Copper, like his namesake Copernicus, embarks on a journey of philosophical enlightenment, using his discoveries of heaven, earth, and human nature to determine the best way to live. Yoshino perfectly captures the beauty and strangeness of prewar Japan – the changing of the seasons, the fried tofu and taiyaki stalls, and the lush landscapes – as Copper explores the city on her bicycle, learning from her friends and family what is most important in life.
