Jonny Greenwood says The Smile have a “big backlog of ideas” for new music
The Smile have a “big backlog of ideas” for new music, according to their guitarist Jonny Greenwood.
The band – Greenwood, Radiohead bandmate Thom Yorke, and former Sons Of Kemet drummer Tom Skinner – released their debut album “A Light For Attracting Attention” in 2022. Earlier this year they confirmed that they had begun the work on them.
Now, Greenwood has told Consequence that the band is “still firing up” and “wanting to continue” with new music.
“The frustration of not being able to play in a band for a few years has accumulated a wealth of ideas,” he says. “We keep shooting at each other, and it feels productive. So, while it’s going on, we just want to keep moving forward, I think.”
On his first album, he said: “We did a lot of the songs live, and we did some recordings that are true to them.
“I think that [el disco trata de] the whole dynamic of three and your boundaries… and try to enjoy it and work within it.”
The band has already performed some new songs live on tour.
In July they played a new song called “Bending Hectic” at the Montreux Jazz Festival, the lyrics of which were written, according to Thom Yorke, “half an hour” before the performance. They also released three more songs during the summer while on tour in Europe: ‘Bodies Laughing’, ‘Friend Of A Friend’ and ‘Colours Fly’.
The band will return to North America for a series of 18 concerts, including their first performance in Mexico City. You can see the full list of dates below and buy tickets here.
