John Legend clarifies the reason for his disagreement with Kanye West

John Legend has clarified why he is no longer close friends with Kanye West.

During an interview last month, Legend – who has collaborated with West many times in the past – explained that the couple’s political divide was too great to sustain their friendship.

He told The Ax Files podcast: “[Kanye y yo] We are not as friends as we used to be. I think honestly because we disagreed publicly about his candidacy, his support for Trump, I think it was too much to keep our friendship, honestly.”

Speaking to the New Yorker, Legend has now spoken about how many media outlets “misread” his comments by pointing to former POTUS Trump as the main cause of his downfall.

“Yes, what was described was that we stopped being friends because he supported Trump, which was a misrepresentation of what I said,” he told NY. ‚ÄúThat was kind of the Rupert Murdoch version of the story: It was all over the New York Post and Fox News.

“What he was saying was that he was very upset with me because I didn’t support him in his candidacy for the presidency, and that was the real reason for us to have a strain in our friendship.”

The legend continued, “I don’t know what’s going to happen in the future, but he was very upset with me because I didn’t support him and I supported Joe Biden. It’s up to him if he can deal with that .”

While the musician doesn’t believe that similar political views should be “everything” in a friendship, he does think that “there are certain things that you believe in that are indicators of your character, and obviously they will affect your friendship.”

The legend later opened up about the time West shared texts the two had exchanged about Donald Trump on Twitter. “Everyone saw how I talked to him about it,” he said. “I spoke to him with love and compassion, and I tried to help him see another way of looking at things. And of course it went where it went.”

Although West and Legend have drifted apart in recent years, the latter previously said he continues to respect the rapper for being “very open about who he is and his struggles with mental health.”

“And it’s very serious, honestly. So I think there’s not much about it that people don’t understand…” Legend explained. “Like he was quite vocal with his views, his struggles, with all the things he’s dealing with.”
