Jason Momoa will star in the live-action film Minecraft and director Napoleon Dynamite will star in

Jason Momoa is in final negotiations to star in a live-action film Minecraft, according to THR, and Napoleon Dynamite director Jared Hess has agreed to direct it. Producing are Mary Parent, Roy Lee, and Jill Messick (credited posthumously), while Lydia Winters and Vu Bui of Mojang Studios are also producing. Jon Berg, Cale Boyter and Jon Spaihts are executive producers.

Some people may rightly wonder what a Minecraft live-action movie will look like, with or without Jason Momoa who has a pickaxe. We do not yet have the answer to that question. We have no details about the story either. Mojang has been exploring potential concepts for a film for nearly a decade, with It’s Always Sunny creator of Philadelphia Rob McElhenney at one point. Previously, Free Guy director Shawn Levy linked. Each creative team has brought a new vision to the film. I hope Jared Hess gives the project a great vision.

The Minecraft live-action movie doesn’t seem to have a review release window yet, but it comes on the heels of a wave of hugely successful video games. Among them, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and the aforementioned Free Guy. Illumination also has a Super Mario movie in the works, starring Chris Pratt.
