It has been confirmed that Janelle Monáe will receive the 2023 SeeHer Award at the next edition of the Critics Choice Awards.
The trophy is awarded to someone who “advocates for gender equality, portrays characters authentically, challenges stereotypes and pushes boundaries.”
Previous SeeHer winners include Kristen Bell, Zendaya, Gal Gadot, Claire Foy and Viola Davis. Halle Berry received the 2022 award.
According to SeeHer, the organization’s mission is to “increase the accurate representation of all women and girls in marketing, advertising, media and entertainment, so that they are seen for who they really are and their full potential.”
The 2023 Critics’ Choice Awards will take place on January 15, and during the ceremony, Monáe will receive the SeeHer Award from her Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery co-star Kate Hudson.
Glass Onion premiered on Netflix late last year and quickly racked up more than 80 million hours of viewing during its opening weekend.
Speaking to NME about her role in the film, Janelle Monáe said Glass Onion’s “number one rule” was to be “entertaining”.
“This is a murder mystery film that is meant to take people on a journey and experience it,” says Monáe. And best of all, because the characters are modernized, the audience will know who they are and what their experiences are.”
“I hadn’t done the comedy. Rian has created so many tone-specific moments of comedy. I think he’s very innovative in this space that’s not very exciting.”
They also teased a new album, joking that they had a “clone” for music that is hard at work in the studio.
Monáe welcomed the New Year by sharing a new piece of music with her since deleted Instagram post.
