J-pop group JO1 withdrawing from KCON LA due to COVID-19

Japanese pop group JO1 has pulled out of this weekend’s KCON LA due to COVID-19.

Five of the 11 members of the J-pop group have tested positive for the coronavirus, the group’s agency Lapone Entertainment revealed in a statement posted on its website on August 15. Therefore, JO1 will not be participating in KCON LA, the K-pop festival and convention celebrating its 10th anniversary in Los Angeles this weekend.

The first JO1 member to test positive for COVID-19 was Sato Keigo, who reported symptoms last Friday. After he tested positive, according to Lapone Entertainment, tests were conducted on the rest of the group, which revealed that four others had also contracted the virus: Takumi Kawanishi, Sukai Kinjo, Issei Mamehara, and Junki Kono.

KCON also shared the news of JO1’s withdrawal from the KCON LA line-up, releasing a statement reading, “After discussing the matter with the artist’s agency, we have decided not to perform their attendance considering the health of our fans followers, our artists and our teams. [sic] as a top priority.”

No refunds will be offered due to this lineup change, KCON said. See the statement below:

JO1 was formed from the top 11 trainees from the first season of the Japanese edition of the talent show Produce 101. They were scheduled to appear on Sunday (August 21) at KCON LA alongside K-pop groups LOONA, NCT DREAM, NMIXX, P1Harmony , STAYC, The Boyz, TO1 and WJSN.

The JO1 event brings the number of performances at KCON LA to 16, including Saturday artists ATEEZ, CRAVITY, ENHYPEN, ITZY, Kep1er, Lightsum, and Stray Kids. Also appearing at KCON will be JO1’s classmates, INI, the J-pop group made up of the top trainees from Produce 101 Japan Season 2.

KCON LA takes place August 19-21 at the Los Angeles Convention Center and Arena. Concert tickets are still available on Ticketmaster and convention tickets can be purchased through the official KCON LA website.
