Indie roguelike Shotgun King takes chess and gives a hot lead

King Shotgun seems deceptively simple and silly at first glance: build the so – called game king of kings and crowbar instead. The roguelike turn-based hidden fun base offers a very addictive, one of the best seen in a long time.

The black king of the chessboard managed to alienate every piece of his weapon, causing them to change sides. With no other choice, he takes a royal shotgun and vows bloody revenge on the white king and his renegade subjects.

Each stage has a chess board with an increasingly difficult layout of enemy pieces for the king to launch, with the ultimate goal, what else, to eliminate the next king. The player king can move one space in each direction to take every turn or aim with his reliable shotgun. The shotgun follows the typical rules of video games, being more effective closely, but with long shots spread that allows you to take down numerous enemies with less damage.

At the end of each stage, you can choose between two mutually exclusive upgrades, each of which strengthens the king and the other team in different ways. For example, you can choose between a +2 value increase in range combined with a modifier that strengthens enemy pawns, or a balanced damage increase in addition to a mod to spawn additional towers.

It’s weird to compare this adaptation to the chess with other video games, but the action reminds me more of Into the Breach with Subsection or the new XCOM games at Firaxis. Shotgun King has the same kind of moment “Oh shit

“in which you realize you are back into a corner, the AI is about to end a successful run, and you know that no one is to blame but yourself. The traditional chess pieces offer a healthy variety of enemies for the game, as well as a way to gradually increase the difficulty by introducing more and more rooks, knights, and queens.Image 1 of 5

I must also point to the Shotgun King title weapon. Video game guns are a great art form right now, and Shotgun King is a great example even through a lo-fi presentation. It has a loud, scary aftermath, and makes a great contribution to your opponent.

Shotgun King grew out of 72-hour jam, and that version is available as a free demo on itch.io and Steam. Developer Punkcake Déliceaux has expanded it into a larger game, now available for $ 6 on itch.io and available on May 12 on Steam.

Punkcake also has Patreon where he tries to put out a new game every month, with Shotgun King in his latest production. So far this year, the team has also released the cozy mushroom building game Shroomchitecht and the Rush for the Ages card game. The developers at Punkcake have set themselves a fairly fast pace, but have managed to deliver some beautiful and impressive little games.
