HER Belle will star in an upcoming hybrid special to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Beauty and the Beast.
As well as showing the 1991 film, the special will feature never-before-seen musical performances and new sets and costumes inspired by the Disney classic. Songs from the original film will also be performed in front of a live audience at the Disney Studios.
Hamish Hamilton will direct the special, and Jon M. Chu (Crazy Rich Asians) will serve as executive producer.
“I can’t believe that I can be part of the Beauty and the Beast legacy,” said HER “The world will see a black, Filipino Belle! I always wanted to be a Disney princess, and I am go Work with two amazing directors, Hamish Hamilton and my favorite, Jon M. Chu.
“It’s very surreal and I couldn’t be more grateful.”
In a statement, Chu said, “With her clear and extraordinary talent and stage presence, HER is the perfect embodiment of our Belle and we are very happy to see the audience in this celebration of creativity.”
“We were both influenced by the original animated film as storytellers, so it’s exciting to collaborate together to honor the art of that timeless classic and inspire a whole new generation of creators.”
Beauty and the Beast: 30th Celebration will air on ABC on December 15 in the US. It will be shown the next day on Disney +.
HER will make her acting debut in director Blitz Bazawule’s upcoming adaptation of The Color Purple.
Last year, the singer won the Oscar for best original song for the song “Fight For You” from the film Judas And The Black Messiah.
