Hayley Williams recalls how she approached Taylor Swift about the 2009 VMAs scandal
Hayley Williams recalled that she first got in touch with Taylor Swift after Swift was criticized at the 2009 VMAs by Kanye West for winning an award for Beyoncé.
The Paramore singer addressed the crowd on the opening night of Swift’s US tour at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. Paramore supported Swift last night (March 17) and will also be performing tonight (March 18) at the same venue.
She recounted the couple’s early interactions, explaining that it was Swift’s mother, Andrea, who wanted the teenage stars to create a supportive relationship due to both being so young in the music industry.
“I remember feeling like, ‘We’re so small, we’re so young,'” Williams recalled on stage at the time, in the late ’00s. “I was like 18 at the time. And I felt a little lonely. so young and doing things, you know, like the Grammys and all.
Andrea Swift contacted Williams, who now performs solo alongside Paramore, and gave her daughter’s phone number, telling her, “She’s just starting out, she doesn’t really know anyone. And I really want having her around. people his age that he’s doing the same thing”.
Williams went on to say that “because I’m like the weirdest person when I’m not on stage” he hasn’t contacted Swift for a while.
“I didn’t message him until there was a certain scandal at the VMAs,” Williams continued, explaining that he did so because “this person is really cool and he didn’t deserve that.”
At the 2009 MTV VMAs (Video Music Awards), West took to the stage as Swift accepted the award for Best Video by a Female Artist, telling her, “I’ll let you finish, but Beyoncé had one of the best videos ever. ! of all time! One of the best videos ever.”
Williams added: “At that time I knew Taylor Swift a little bit.
“We have to look at his trajectory. And I’m sure you know that because you’re here tonight and you obviously get it, but there are times when I talk to people and I’m like, ‘ I’m not sure. You realize how amazing he is. This person, this artist.'”
Swift’s “Eras” tour opened last night with a set list of 44 songs from her entire career, lasting just over three hours.
The singer performed a selection of songs from each of his ten albums, starting with ‘Lover’, from 2019, and continuing with ‘Fearless’, ‘Evermore’, ‘Reputation’, ‘Speak Now’, ‘ Red’, ‘Folklore’, ‘1989’, ‘Taylor Swift’ and, finally, ‘Midnights’.
So far, Swift’s tour this spring and summer has confirmed US dates, however, a note on her website says no international dates have been announced yet.
