Glastonbury Festival announces program for 2023
Glastonbury Festival has announced the first line-up for its 2023 edition, headlined by Arctic Monkeys and Guns N’ Roses.
Alex Turner and company will take to the Pyramid Stage for the third time on Friday, June 23, before GnR make their Worthy Farm debut the following night (June 24). Both bands will be part of the already announced Elton John headliners for this year’s event.
Lil Nas X will perform right before John, and Lana Del Rey and Wizkid will headline the Next Stage (via The Guardian).
Other confirmed artists include Lizzo, Lewis Capaldi, The War On Drugs, Chvrches, Christine And The Queens, Thundercat, Carly Rae Jepsen and Manic Street Preachers.
52% of the 54 names on the front poster are men. In 2019, Glastonbury co-organiser Emily Eavis promised that she aimed to ensure a 50/50 gender split “as close as possible”.
“I think there is light at the end of the tunnel,” he said in 2018 about the fight for gender equality at the festival and in the music industry in general.
In an interview with The Guardian, Eavis admitted that this year’s line-up was all-male, and attributed the lack of viable female headliners to an industry “channel” problem.
He explained that Guns N’ Roses were hired after a previously confirmed female headliner had to cancel because they had “changed their tour plans”. Although he did not reveal the artist’s name, Eavis said he hoped to sign her within the next five years.
Taylor Swift, who headlined the canceled Glasto 2020, was rumored for this year’s festival before she was ruled out due to the pop star’s conflict with her North American “Eras Tour”.
46% of the 54 acts confirmed for this summer’s edition are non-white or have non-white members.
“[Estamos] fully focused on balancing our lineup. It’s not just about gender, it’s about all aspects of diversity,” Eavis said. “We’re probably one of the only big shows that really focuses on this.”
