Fleet Foxes’ Robin Pecknold joins the National for “Goodbye” at All Points East

The National returned to London last night (August 26) to headline All Points East 2022 – watch them perform their new single ‘Weird Goodbyes’ with Fleet Foxes’ Robin Pecknold below.

‘Weird Goodbyes’ was released last week and features Justin Vernon from Bon Iver. Introducing Pecknold, The National’s Aaron Dessner said that his friend and collaborator had never sung the song.

Elsewhere, The National played another new song – “Tropic Morning News (Haversham)” – and hits from the catalogue.

The National has been performing “Weird Goodbyes” live since the end of May. They played it for the first time in Pamplona, ​​Spain on 28 May – The National’s first concert in three years – where it was included in the set list as “Bathwater (Mount Auburn)”.

Commenting on “Goodbye,” Matt Berninger of the National said, “It’s about putting the past behind you and moving on, only to be overwhelmed by underlying causes.”

Regarding the process of creating the single, the band’s Aaron Dessner said: “‘Weird Goodbyes’ was one of the first new songs we did. It got stuck in my head, it felt like something that only could Bryan naturally played, and we built the song around that beat.

“Matt’s melody and words were so elegant and poignant from the beginning: mourning the loss of innocence and inspiration, clinging to memories and feelings that inevitably slip away, and the pain we all go through at foreign salvation”.

Last week, The National guitarist Bryce Dessner spoke to NME about what to expect from the band’s new material.

When asked about his previous comments that the new music they are writing has a “classic National sound”, the guitarist said: “I think that’s true, but there are other things as well. point in terms of our creativity as a band There is a lot going on and there is a lot of music. We are allowing ourselves to dream about it, take risks, try things and give the songs time to develop.

“It’s starting to be something we’re excited about. It’s hard to say what shape it’s going to take, but the stakes are high.”
