Stardew Valley has been on the market for six years now, and somehow it’s still growing. A recent update on the Stardew Valley press site shows that the game has now sold more than 20 million copies on all platforms, including 13 million on PC alone.
“The 20 million copy milestone is truly amazing,” Stardew Valley creator Eric Barone said in an email to PC Gamer. “I can’t believe the game has reached this level.”
One of the most interesting things about the new landmark is the way Stardew Valley’s sales speed seems to be growing, despite its age. It sold more than a million copies just a few months after its release, and then hit the 10 million mark four years later in January 2020. In September 2021 the number was over 15 million, and now it’s just eight months later, we’re into the 20 million.

Barone has confirmed that this is what is happening: Stardew Valley is selling better than ever.
“Stardew Valley’s average daily sales are higher today than at any other time,” he wrote. “I do not know exactly why. My hope is that the game will continue to spread word of mouth, and the more people who play it, the more people will share the game with their friends. Anyway, I am I am delighted that Stardew Valley continues to spread. “
But it turned out that going from 15 to 20 million copies sold is not as big a leap as it seems. “Part of the apparent jump in the sales count is that I have counted more accurately this time,” Barone explains. “The old figure of 15 million was an understatement, because he did not have complete information and wanted to get lost on the low side.” With the complete transition to self – publishing this year, I was able to create a more comprehensive sales account. “
Barone revealed in early 2020 that he was working on two new games, and formally unveiled one of them, Haunted Chocolatier, in October 2021. He continued to work on Stardew Valley throughout, and said that means the continued popularity that it is likely to have. It will continue, but Haunted Chocolatier is always a priority.
“Ultimately, I have to follow my heart or the quality of the material will suffer,” Barone wrote. “Right now I’m really looking forward to working on Haunted Chocolatier, so that’s going to be a priority for me. If I need a break from Haunted Chocolatier, or if I have some ideas for Stardew Valley that I’m talking about, maybe I’ll change gears for a while. “
“However, I don’t have rigid plans. If I’m productive every day and go my own way, I feel good … and I think that will translate into a better baseline for everyone.”
Haunted Chocolatier has no information on its current release date; As we noted when it was announced, Barone was very light on details prior to the release of Stardew Valley, and we can probably expect the same with his new game.
