Ellie Goulding scored her 17th BMI award, winning the performing rights organisation’s President’s Award at the 2022 BMI London Awards on 3 October. The private event, held at London’s Savoy Hotel on October 3, also honored Tems, who became a global revelation with the BMI Influence Award, and Ed Sheeran in various categories.

With this award, Goulding joins other honorees such as Imagine Dragons, Noel Gallagher, Luis Fonsi, Pitbull, Willie Nelson, Gloria and Emilio Estefan and many more. BMI President and co-host of the evening, Mike O’Neill, presented him with the award.

“I’ve never won anything like this and it means a lot to me,” Goulding said in her acceptance speech. “I moved out of my house when I was 16 and it kind of started there. And I felt like I had a lot to lose by making a living doing something that everyone told me was definitely impossible.”

The British pop star continued: “In the United Kingdom in particular, and as a woman, the idea is ingrained that ambition is something bad and not great, but it shouldn’t be. Ambition is an essential ingredient. , and together with talent and a bit of luck, for anyone hoping to have a long term career, in a very tough industry, it’s a must, so for anyone standing in their way, please don’t listen to the people that says you want something bigger and better, because you deserve it.

Tems, who received worldwide acclaim following her successful collaborations with Drake and WizKid, was awarded the BMI Impact Award “in recognition of her innovative artistry, creative vision and impact on the future of music,” according to the event’s press release. In receiving this award, he joins previous winners Raye and Arlo Parks. Accepting the award, Tems said, “I just wanted to say thank you. Thank you for this award…I’ve come a long way and I’m so grateful.”

BMI also recognized Sheeran and Johnny McDaid with the European Song of the Year award for their song “Bad Habits”, which is awarded to the most performed song of the previous year by writers from the UK or Europe in the BMI catalogue. Sheeran was also honored with three other BMI London Awards this year, honoring 4 million streams of “I Don’t Care”, 5 million streams of “Perfect”, and in the Pop Songs category for “Afterglow” co-written with David Hodges. and “Shivers” co-written by McDaid and Kal Lavelle.

Elton John won three BMI London Awards, in recognition of the 7 million performances of “Rocket Man”, the 6 million performances of “Tiny Dancer” and in the category of pop songs with “Cold Heart (Pnau Remix)”, co- written. by Andrew Meecham and Dean Meredith.
