De La Soul pays tribute to Trugoy The Dove with a TV performance featuring The Roots
De La Soul paid tribute to their late member Trugoy The Dove with a performance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon featuring The Roots.
The rap legends appeared on Thursday night’s (March 16) show to perform “Stakes Is High” from their classic 1996 album of the same name.
Trugoy La Paloma died at the age of 54 last month. In recent years he has had various health problems, although the cause of his death has not been disclosed.
On Thursday, Fallon’s band The Roots joined De La Soul, and Black Thought replaced Dove on the song’s verses.
Before the performance, enduring De La Soul members Posdnuos and Maseo spoke about the 15-year process of bringing their catalog back to streaming services. They also reflected on their early days on Long Island and the recording of their 1989 debut “3 Feet High And Rising.”
Last month, Posdnuos and Maseo broke their initial social media silence with two Instagram posts paying tribute to their bandmate.
Both posts included lengthy messages from each of the surviving members, along with a carousel of images depicting the rapper throughout his life. First of all, Posdnuos paid him respect, writing: “You were at the heart of our group. You brought a lot of creativity, energy and passion to our music, and your influence will be felt in the years to come.”
Referring to Trugoy’s opening verse from his 1991 album “De La Soul Is Dead,” “Ring Ring Ring (Ha Ha Hey),” he continued, “Thank you for helping us be a group that will stick in the timeline. culture as well as the fabric of the music, and from now on when we do “Ring Ring Ring Ha Ha Hey” we will say ‘2-2-2-2-222 we have angels in heaven who can talk to you'” .
Maseo then wrote a heartfelt message reflecting on his close relationship with the late artist: “Dave, thank you so much for being in my life. Even though you and I argued crazy, we both admitted when we were wrong and came full circle and We said, “I love you.”
