Choi Yena brings out her gamer side in her new music video for “Smartphone”

Former IZ*ONE member and solo artist Choi Yena has released the music video for “Smartphone,” the title track from her second mini-album of the same name.

In the animated image, Choi is a gamer who guides an avatar of himself through a playground full of whimsical pets, finally stopping in a shooter inspired by the Five Nights at Freddy’s franchise.

“Mix and match as you like / Airplane in my hands / No matter where you go or what you’re going to do, connect / This star is too narrow to hold me,” sings Choi.

Besides the title track, “Smartphone” includes four other songs, two of which Choi credits for co-writing the lyrics. The idol is one of the authors of the B-sides “Make U Smile” and “WithOrWithout”, as well as the title track “Smartphone”. Other songs on the album are “Lemon-Aid” and “U”.

‘Smartphone’ comes almost eight months after the singer’s solo debut with ‘Smiley’ in January, which led to the single of the same title. That single, which featured vocals from South Korean singer-songwriter BIBI, made NME’s list of the 15 best K-pop songs of 2022 so far.

Choi is one of three former IZ*ONE members to officially perform as solo artists, following former leader Kwon Eun-bi in April and singer Jo Yu-ri last October.
