Cab Death For Cutie Announces New ‘Asphalt Meadows’ Album With Single ‘Roman Candles’

Death Cab For Cutie has announced details of their 10th studio album, ‘Asphalt Meadows’ – listen to the debut single ‘Roman Candles’ below.

The follow-up to ‘Thank You For Today’ 2018 will be released on September 10th via Atlantic. ‘The Georgia EP’ was the band’s latest release, a collection of five covers that came out in 2020 through Bandcamp and were subsequently made available on streaming platforms. Last year also saw the re-release of his LP ‘The Photo Album’ with 35 newly remastered tracks.

Roman Candles ”is the sharp fear that comes with living in a nerve city on a dying planet.

Singer Ben Gibbard tells him: “The lyrics are composed of a few different songs dealing with my general sense of anxiety; the feeling that the fabric of a functioning society is emerging during the pandemic.”

Speaking to NME in March 2021, Gibbard explained that his then – new Fender Mustang guitar inspired the next Death Cab LP.

“We have a lot of songs and I’m very happy with the content,” he said. “I’m sure many musicians say that their new material is the best thing they’ve ever done and they try to hype it up. I don’t want to put that weight on it, but I can say I’m excited about it. I think it’s going to be a very good record. “

The musician went on to say that the music the band was working on at the time made him reflect on his own life and death amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

“There is a theme about wasting time and the limited amount we all have,” Gibbard told NME. “The last year of our lives has been exposed to the fact that we are all fatal and only here for a short time. It happens faster than you think.”

He added: “Love and death are always big things for me, but there is a new component to how fast time moves and how transient our lives here really are.”

Death Cab For Cutie is scheduled to perform a series of concerts in the United States this summer, with an additional date scheduled at Forest Hills Stadium in New York on September 30th. You can buy the remaining tickets here.
