
Brian May of Queens and Lionesses has been included in the 2023 New Year’s Honors List
King Charles has announced the 2023 New Year’s Honors list, and the Lionesses of England and the Queen’s guitarist Brian May are among the honourees.
The new King’s first honors list also includes national treasures Stephen Graham (OBE for services to theater) and Frank Skinner (MBE for services to entertainment), the latter of whom said he refrained from telling his family about the honor to believe it was. “some sort of clerical error”.
Brian May has been knighted in the list, while England captain Leah Williamson has received an OBE. Their partners, Lucy Bronze, Beth Mead and Ellen White, were awarded MBEs.
The list includes 1,107 winners, with a gender distribution of 50%. Also in attendance are athlete Denise Lewis, fashion designer Mary Quant and artist Grayson Perry.
Speaking of the honour, May told BBC News: “It’s a kind of license, a kind of commission to keep doing what I’m doing, and it gives me a bit more elbow strength. So I’m very happy .”
Lucy Bronze added: “It’s something my family will be very proud of.”
Sir Hugh Robertson, Chairman of the Sports Honors Committee, has responded to the criticism of not awarding every member of the team, saying: “What we have tried to do is adhere to the principle of the honors system, which is recognizes excellence and recognizes extraordinary contributions.” Otherwise, he said, “people who played five minutes on the field … will receive an award.” View the full list of 2023 New Year’s Awards here.
In 2022, Daniel Craig was awarded the title Companion of the Order of Saint Michael and Saint George in the New Year’s Honors list, specifically the same title held by James Bond.
Other entertainment honorees included Oscar winner Vanessa Redgrave and Absolutely Fabulous star Joanna Lumley, and film directors Paul Greengrass (Bourne series), John Boorman (Deliverance), Andrew Haigh (45) and Island-born independent filmmaker Trinity Horace Shango Ové.
Lisa Burger, Chief Executive and Joint Chief Executive of the National Theatre, and EastEnders actor Nitin Ganatra were also honourees.
