Billie Eilish thought U2 was from Scranton because of a comic from The Office

Billie Eilish has revealed that until last year she believed that U2 was from Scranton, Pennsylvania, and not Dublin, Ireland, due to a joke in The Office.

U2 formed in 1976 in Dublin, and Eilish was born in 2001. “I started watching The Office very young, I barely understood any reference to it,” she explained on a recent episode of the Office Ladies podcast, hosted by stars Jenna Fischer and Game Angela Kinsey. .

Eilish explained that because Steve Carell’s Michael Scott got so many things wrong throughout The Office, she also got it wrong “because I learned it from Michael Scott.”

The “worst” came courtesy of the four-season series ‘Goodbye Toby Part One,’ in which Scott asks Jim Halpert (John Krasinski), “Hey, what band from Scranton made it big? Was it U2?” , to which Halpert replied, “Yes.”

“There’s no pause, there’s no laughter,” said Eilish (via Consequence). “Honestly, in my head, I thought that Jim was like, ‘Oh, that’s a stupid question,’ because they are obviously the band that made it big from Scranton … I thought that was the vibe.”

Eilish went on to reveal that she only found out U2 were Irish when Bono sent her flowers.

“Last June we were in Ireland. I was at my hotel and flowers were delivered to my room. I was carrying a very, very sweet letter that said ‘From Bono,'” said Eilish before revealing that the note read : “Welcome to my hometown”.

“I was like, ‘Why is he sending me something to Ireland? I kept asking everyone, ‘What is Bono doing sending me flowers halfway around the world? Why would he ? What are you talking about? They’re Irish.’ I blame Sean for this.”

Billie Eilish is an admitted member of The Office. In 2020, she appeared in a 12-part documentary, An Oral History Of The Office, alongside several of the show’s stars. In 2019, it was revealed that the show’s cast had personally licensed samples used in “My Strange Addiction” from Eilish’s debut album, “When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?”. The song contains dialogue from the episode “Threat Level Midnight”.

Meanwhile, to celebrate his 60th birthday, U2 frontman Bono shared a playlist of songs that “saved” his life, including Eilish’s ‘Everything I Wanted’.
