Ashnikko opens up about her ‘beautiful’ friendship with Ethel Cain at the 2023 Reading Festival
Ashnikko spoke to NME backstage at the 2023 Reading Festival about her “beautiful” friendship with Ethel Cain. Watch the full video interview above.
Earlier this year, the two entered the studio to work on a track for Ashnikko’s (Ashton Casey) debut album “WEEDKILLER”, which has just been released. The result was the expansive track “Dying Star,” which deals with themes of desire and intention: “When we met, I was already a huge fan,” explains Ashnikko, “Ethel came into the studio and met We got it straight away. It was a great experience. Pleasant”.
Ashnikko praised her collaborator, who released her breakout album “Preacher’s Daughter” in May 2022: “She has the most beautiful voice. She makes you feel like you’re in a cave, but also in a church in the center of the world. , but also because you’re in a forest at midnight,” he told Cain. “This is what it feels like to hear her sing.”
They added: “She did a lot of production on that song too. She’s a once in a generation kind of artist. It was a pleasure to work with her.”
Elsewhere, Ashnikko, who appeared on The Cover earlier this week (August 21), spoke about her road to introducing ‘WEEDKILLER’, the follow-up to her 2021 mixtape ‘Demidevil’. “I’m so proud that I took the time to really think about all the songs on the album and put them into my videos. I approached songwriting in a different way with this album.”
On Friday (August 25), Ashnikko made her third appearance in a row at Reading, following a slot on the Radio 1 Dance stage in 2022 and in the Lock Up tent the previous year. For the 2023 edition of the festival, he made a surprise appearance in the Festival Republic tent.
